From Philosophy to Energy
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been driven by big questions - questions about power, inequality, and the systems that shape our world.
Studying philosophy at the University of Melbourne gave me a framework to analyse these issues, but it was my growing interest in Australian politics that pushed me to explore real-world impacts. My passion for energy policy didn’t emerge overnight, but rather through an evolving awareness of how energy markets, inequality, and the existential threat of climate change intersect.

The Politics of Energy
My academic background in philosophy and politics has led me to explore the foundational structures of governance, power, and societal organisation, shaping my understanding of how political systems influence decision-making and public policy. Energy isn’t just about electricity or fuel—it’s about power, in every sense of the word:
-
Who controls energy production?
-
Who benefits from energy transitions?
-
How does energy pricing impact the most vulnerable communities?
These aren’t just abstract concerns; they’re central to modern political and economic debates. Understanding how corporations, governments, and individuals navigate energy challenges is critical - especially as climate policies evolve and the push for decarbonisation accelerates.

Experience in the
Energy Sector

My journey in the energy sector has been more than just theoretical. This year I completed an internship at the Grattan Institute which was formative in developing my engagement with real-world policy research, analysing carbon pricing, regulatory frameworks, and the economic impacts of transitioning to a low-carbon future. At Grattan I worked with industry experts, researched market dynamics, and developed insights into how energy policy affects both businesses and households. This hands-on experience has reinforced my commitment to working on pragmatic solutions that drive both sustainability and affordability in energy markets.
Bridging Music and Markets: A Different Perspective
At first glance, my life as the singer and frontman of Radio Free Alice might seem unrelated to my interest in energy policy. But in reality, my experience in the music industry has shaped my perspective on how global markets function, particularly in sectors facing rapid technological and economic shifts.

Touring internationally, working with
major music publications, and
managing the business side of an
independent band has given me
first-hand insight into market structures, international finance, and the power of monopolies.
Whether it’s the music industry or energy, the same core issues emerge:
-
Who dictates the terms of market access, and what barriers exist for new entrants?
-
How do monopolies and corporate consolidation shape pricing and control over resources?
-
What is the role of government intervention in ensuring fair competition and innovation?
Balancing art and academia has made me adaptable, analytical, and curious - three qualities that define my approach to both policy work and creative expression.
Why Energy?
The energy sector is undergoing a profound
transformation, making it an exciting and essential
space to be part of right now. Governments
worldwide are re-evaluating carbon pricing
mechanisms, industries are shifting towards cleaner
technologies, and consumer demand for affordable,
sustainable energy is at an all-time high. The urgency of climate action means that businesses and policymakers are being forced to reconcile economic growth with emissions reductions, creating both new opportunities and challenges.
But policy gaps remain, and I want to be part of bridging that gap in helping businesses and governments align financial incentives with real emissions reduction. Whether through policy research or in government, I’m committed to helping shape the future of energy policy in the most positive way I can.

Looking Ahead
As I move forward, my focus remains on
policy, innovation, and real-world application.
The same curiosity that led me to philosophy,
politics, and music now drives me
toward understanding how energy markets
function and how we can build a more
equitable system.
Energy policy isn’t just about numbers and emissions—it’s about people, power, and the future of global economies. And for me, it’s about asking the right questions and finding solutions that work for businesses, governments, and communities alike.
